A new custom-built gymnastics venue has been unveiled for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The Ariake Gymnastics Centre, which cost $188million, will be based in central Tokyo and uses wood that was sourced from around Japan.
The centre uses 2300³ metres of wood and features supporting rods which will make the building appear as if it is suspended in mid-air from a distance.
The main stadium being used for the Olympics will also use a large amount of wood in reference to traditional Japanese architecture of days gone by.
"We're using a lot of wood," said the venue's general manager, Koichi Fukui.
"We can smell wood and feel the warmth of wood,"

Kengo Kuma, the architect behind the Olympics’ main arena, has also been involved in a number of high-profile timber-based projects in the past. Some examples of his work include the Garden Terrace Nagasaki Hotel in southwest Japan and the Yunfeng Spa Resort in China.
