A new custom-built gymnastics venue has been unveiled for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Ariake Gymnastics Centre, which cost $188million, will be based in central Tokyo and uses wood that was sourced from around Japan.

The centre uses 2300³ metres of wood and features supporting rods which will make the building appear as if it is suspended in mid-air from a distance.

The main stadium being used for the Olympics will also use a large amount of wood in reference to traditional Japanese architecture of days gone by.

"We're using a lot of wood," said the venue's general manager, Koichi Fukui.

"We can smell wood and feel the warmth of wood,"
