New innovation insights on reducing operational carbon

The UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) showcases solutions to reducing operational carbon in a new publication released last week.

Net-zero has turned into a buzzword in the construction industry in recent years as we try to reduce carbon emissions as well as our impact on the planet. WorldGBC already have ninety-four businesses across twenty-eight different cities signed up to their Net-Zero Carbon Building Commitment (NZCBC). The agreement outlines that we need to half the energy use of buildings in the UK as well as global carbon emissions.

This will be a huge challenge that requires an innovative approach. It is important that we embrace any new solutions that will ensure we can swiftly and radically transform the built environment industry.

The success of this pilot project marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity.

Tackling the climate and ecological crises is too big a challenge for an organisation on their own therefore collaboration is imperative to make net-zero truly achievable. Many solutions for net-zero already exist however they are not necessarily common knowledge or well understood, this makes UKGBC uniquely positioned to push the wider industry towards this common goal.

UKGBC ran a pilot-solutions crowdsourcing project that aimed to support the achievement of net-zero carbon buildings. The project informed the development of wider work on addressing sustainability challenges across the built environment through increasing solution identification, dissemination and adoption.

Alastair Mant, Head of Business Transformation at UKGBC, said: “There is widespread agreement across our industry that we need to act on climate change. The success of this pilot project marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity and we hope that through our unique position, we can convene those with the very best solutions to address the shared challenges across our industry and put us on track to net-zero.”
