This assessment focuses on the environmental impacts associated with the life cycle of a product, from the raw material extraction through to the recycling or disposal of the product at the end of its useful life.
By using CIBSE’s Mid-level TM65 Methodology, Albion has assessed the energy and materials required to manufacture, transport, and use the product and has given each product a simple “LCA figure” (measured in kgCO2e) to enable an accurate way to compare the emissions released into the environment from different products.
Albion Valves is currently analysing data for their range of Stainless Steel Valves & Stainless Steel Fittings. Once completed, over 80% of Albion’s range will have an Embodied Carbon Lifecycle Assessment, which will assist the consultants within the industry to make a more informed decision about the environmental impact of the valves they are using in their systems.
Not only are Albion striving to help consumers make more informed decisions, but they are actively monitoring and reducing their CO2 emissions at their HQ in Barnsley. Albion has installed 240 PV panels, covering 468.7m2 of their facilities’ roof. These feed 3 x 30 kW inverters, which can generate over 100,000 kwh of clean energy per year, saving over 49,000kg per year of CO2 emissions. Of this, they expect to use around 43,000 kWh or 41% of self-generated, clean electricity whilst selling back 62,000 kWh or 59% of this to the grid.
Sanwal Amjed, Albion’s Quality Manager, managed this project. He comments, "My promotion to Quality Manager in 2024 made me responsible for all Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety operations at Albion, therefore one of my ongoing targets is to meet any Scope 1, Scope 2, or Scope 3 CO2 reduction targets determined by the UK government and assist the business in becoming ‘greener’ in general, despite not always having a legal obligation to do so as an SME."
Installing PV panels means Albion can reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and minimise the business’s carbon footprint. The PV panels will generate enough power for the whole site to operate during summer months, including the charging of electric company vehicles! Albion is striving to achieve ISO 50001 accreditation, which demonstrates a commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability and assists in reaching energy management goals as a company.
"At Albion, we understand the negative impact businesses can have on climate change; therefore, we are always looking for ways to identify, address, and improve where we can, and help others do so too." - Sanwal Amjed, Quality Manager, Albion Valves
