Stelrad Case Study: Sidegate Primary School Ipswich

Sidegate Primary School in the north of Ipswich in Suffolk is a large and busy primary school with over 650 pupils. It provides education for a broad cross section of the population accepting pupils with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds. In addition to its mainstream classes, it has a Special Education Unit that offers education to pupils with a range of complex needs.

The school has recently undergone a total refurbishment project to upgrade its heating system to ensure the pupils and staff are comfortable all year round. The project was undertaken by contractor T Clarke and saw the installation of 185 Low Surface Temperature (LST) radiators across the school, in classrooms and in public areas of the school building.

LST Radiators adhere to specific safety regulations, sitting within an outer cover. LST Radiators ensure that individuals do not burn themselves if accidentally touched, brushed against, or handled as the outer casing only heats to 43°C. They are the perfect match for buildings where the young, the elderly and the vulnerable live and congregate such as nurseries, schools, care and nursing homes, sheltered housing schemes and even general needs housing that may be used by the groups who are susceptible to damage from being too close to radiators. These LST radiators form Stelrad’s Safety Series range.

Stelrad has developed the largest selection of LST radiators in its impressive portfolio – offering more sizes and outputs than any other company in the sector. They have also added different styles and even different colours to the range to give the widest choice on the UK and Irish markets.

And the popularity of LST radiators shows little sign of diminishing with sales from the Stelrad range on the rise and clearly meeting the requirements of specifiers and contractors across the board.

Stuart Dixon is Stelrad’s Specification Manager for the area and says “LST radiators are designed to ensure they offer as much protection as possible to those for whom they are designed to provide heating – to include ensuring rounded corners and edges to the design to avoid damage from sharp edges. LST radiators are mainly installed in buildings to offer protection to vulnerable people. Additional benefits such as safety grilles, easy to operate heating controls and even arthritic adaptors for older people who are unable to grip controls easily, can be incorporated to provide a user friendly ‘package’ for those they seek to help.”

We, and the school management can be confident they will provide the required levels of warmth in the colder months but will also always provide the necessary levels of safety for everyone around the building. They offer the best of all worlds when it comes to heating an area like this.”

A Low Surface Temperature (LST) panel heater is designed so that the surface temperature of the radiator does not exceed 43°C. This is for safety reasons to prevent possible scolding or burning of skin in specifications where safety is paramount, such as schools and care homes.
