Lowering Embodied Carbon in Building Envelopes: One Site, One Supply Chain

Whole-life carbon is no longer a nice-to-have in specification. The question isn't whether it will shape procurement, but how well prepared our material choices and supply chains are for it. For designers, the biggest single lever isn't operational performance, it's what's embedded in materials before they reach site. When it comes to manufacturing aluminium systems, at AMS, that starts with the billet itself.

Billet: where the real carbon savings start

The biggest lever in aluminium's carbon footprint sits upstream, in the billet, and it applies across every system AMS manufactures: curtain wall, window or door. AMS offers billet containing a minimum of 50% and 75% post-consumer scrap, third-party certified and fully traceable. The difference is stark: this billet carries a footprint of roughly 2.3–2.9 kg CO2e per kg of aluminium, against a European average of around 8 kg and as much as 20 kg for primary aluminium produced in China. Aluminium can be remelted indefinitely without loss of quality, using a fraction of the energy required for primary smelting, which is why recycled content is the single biggest upfront-carbon decision a specifier can make, and why it's built into AMS's entire range rather than offered as an add-on.

The one-stop-shop advantage

That low-carbon billet only delivers its full benefit if the rest of the supply chain doesn't undo it. Most façade supply chains are fragmented: extrusion in one location, powder coating in another, fabrication with a third-party sub-contractor, each leg adding transport miles and handling emissions before a system reaches site. AMS collapses that chain into a single 500,000 sq ft site in Little Island, Cork: four extrusion lines, three powder coating plants, anodising, sublimation, CNC machining, and sheet metal work all under one roof, the only façade systems manufacturer in Ireland acting as a single-source supplier to approved glazing sub-contractors. That integration runs across curtain walling, windows and doors alike, so the saving from recycled billet isn't eroded by transport and handling further down the chain, and it gives specifiers a far cleaner, more traceable A1–A3 embodied carbon picture.

Solar and water on site

The embodied carbon story extends to how the factory runs. AMS's 1-megawatt roof-mounted solar PV system, already one of the largest of its kind in Ireland, is currently being doubled to 2MW, offsetting a growing share of grid demand across the floor. Alongside it, a rainwater harvesting programme feeds several manufacturing processes, cutting mains water demand at a site running three powder coating lines and a fully automated anodising plant around the clock.

Performance that keeps paying down

Embodied carbon is the headline, but operational carbon over a building's lifetime matters too. AMS's systems, the MU800 curtain wall suite and the XT66 Performance Plus window and door systems, are built on AMS's own proprietary "XT" thermal break technology and achieve U-values as low as 0.89 W/m²K, compounding savings across decades of occupancy alongside the upfront reductions already built in.

Taken together: low-carbon billet, a vertically integrated supply chain, on-site renewables, and high-performing systems, AMS treats embodied carbon as the starting point for a genuinely whole-life carbon strategy.
