China have built a hospital in the space of less than two weeks in response to the coronavirus.

A 1000-bed facility was constructed in Wuhan, the main source of the global epidemic which has killed over 80 people in China.

"China has a record of getting things done fast even for monumental projects like this," said Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations.

"This authoritarian country relies on this top down mobilisation approach. They can overcome bureaucratic nature and financial constraints and are able to mobilise all of the resources."

The Wuhan Huosheshan Hospital is a 25,000-square-metre facility, constructed using prefabricated elements and its design was based on the Xiaotangshan Hospital built in 2003 in response to the SARS outbreak.

In around two weeks’ time, the Chinese government are set to open a second hospital designed to tackle the coronavirus crisis. The Leishenshan Hospital will be a larger building, also based in Wuhan.
