Facilitating remote coordination on construction projects

Project coordination has become a challenging task due to the problems that arise from social distancing. Luckily, multiple BIM tools are able to assist with this, such as the ability to update projects and compare data across its lifecycle. US CAD industry-veteran Teresa Martin helps to outline why the adoption of BIM solutions is extremely welcome in today’s society.

What stages can be coordinated remotely?

Workflow is able to reside in a cloud-based platform, enabling design and construction teams to coordinate with ease. This is through the use of a single platform and 24/7 accessible data. If implemented in the right way, BIM will allow a continuous flow of data from conceptual to handover, giving a building owner a full digital twin of the project.

What features make coordination most efficient?

BIM lets the user track and update changes without rework. The introduction of CAD changed the process of hand drafting to drafting on a computer, each drawing had to be revised manually but BIM has offered a solution to that. It allows for change across multiple data sets and information does not have to be re-entered, meaning errors are reduced.

How does BIM help coordinate data collection and comparison?

It helps to connect disparate data streams across multiple project assets. Potential changes are able to be compared for things such as code compliance, client requirements and environmental impact.

How can discrepancies among contractors be caught early?

BIM allows for the creation of digital twins, which projects data that can be evaluated across many dimensions. Physical issues such as a steel beam cutting across a duct can be caught before installation, saving time and money on the process of ripping it out. Creating data-rich 3D BIM models allows for efficient change and communication among all involved on a project.

During the coronavirus pandemic, are there added benefits to using BIM-enabled contactless coordination?

Yes. The pandemic has shone a bright spotlight on the industry, companies that invested early in a digital transformation have faired considerably better and continue to maintain a huge lead in productivity and efficiencies.
